CI for Flex Mobile Applications: Part 6

This entry is part 7 of 9 in the series Continuous Integration for Flex Apps
Code Coverage

Another important step when creating a CI suite for your mobile application is code coverage. Code coverage measures the amout of code covered by unit tests by class and/or by line, giving valuable information on which parts of your application need more unit testing and which are already pretty well covered.

Static Code Analysis

In this part of the tutorial I’m going to show you how to integrate steps for Static Code Analysis (SCA). The quality of your code can easily be checked by using the following tools:

  • FlexPMD checks your code for violations of common conventions, such as unused variables, empty catch-blocks and so on.
  • FlexCPD checks your code for violations of the DRY– (Don’t Repeat Yourself’) Paradigma by detecting code duplications
  • FlexMetrics checks the ratio of LOC (lines of code) versus the lines used for comments, which can be useful to detect under- (or over-) documentation of your code.
  • CLOC reports languages used in your project and counts the single lines of code (LOC) used for each language (omitting comments of course)

Unfortunately, there is no tool to check test coverage. There used to be a tool called FlexCover, but it has not been maintained in a long time and I haven’t brought it to work. Cobertura, a popular tool to measure test coverage, does not support ActionScript (afaik), which leaves us with nothing to check the amount and location of untested code, which in my opinion is a pity.

Generating Documentation

Now that we have compiled, packaged and tested our app, it is high time we create a documentation for our app – automatically of course. For this step to work you should have commented your classes, functions and variables with the ASDOC syntax. Otherwise, the ASDOC-compiler will not recognize the comments and not be able to produce the documentation.

The good thing is that if you dutifully described your code with ASDOC comments, you get the documentation virtually for free – and it’s also very similar to compiling the code as we did in the first part of this tutorial, since it’s only a special way of compiling the code not into a *.swf or *.swc file but in a set of HTML documents to put in a directory (or Jenkins in our case). That’s the reason why this part of the tutorial is the shortest of all.

Performing Unit Tests

In this third part of the tutorial we are going to set up our build process to perform automated unit tests. The results are the transformed into a readable format in HTML and can also be included in your job dashboard to see the status of the last build at a glance.

Packaging your App

In this part of the tutorial we are going to package the compiled classes together with other external, non-compiling assets (e.g. image, audio, configuration files, …) to get a package that is ready to be installed on mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets.

If you haven’t done already, follow the steps described in the first part of the tutorial to get the compiled classes as an *.swf-File.

CI for Flex Mobile Applications – Part 1

Compiling your code

In this first part of my tutorial on how to set up a CI process for your mobile app written with Flex I will show you how to compile your code. If you haven’t already followed the steps described in Part 0 you should do so now before you start.

As a result of this second part we should get our compiled code in form of a *.swf-File which will contain the compiled classes (i.e. your application logic). This file can later be bundled together with other assets you may have (images, audio, config-files …) as well as the AIR runtime, resulting in an *.ipa (iOS) or *.apk (Android) file for publication in the AppStore resp. PlayStore.

The setup

This is the first in a series of posts where I’ll describe the process of setting up a Continuous Integration process to build a mobile app created with Flex. I will use Jenkins as a CI server and ANT for my build scripts.

This first article is about getting started and setting up the right tools.
